Your skin does many things. It protects you from the sun's ultraviolet
rays, it is a barrier that protects the body from the environment. These
can include dirt, and bacteria, plus and types of environmental hazards
that can threaten your health.
Another role the skin plays is that of an early warning system because
of the nerves that are embedded in the skin. These nerves warn the body
about hot, cold; sharp, dull; hard, soft experiences you can have
everyday. It is one of the organs of sensation.
The skin regulates the moisture in the body, the temperature, and
as one way the your body uses to remove waste products that
build up in the process of just living.
And, the skin is considered to be your body's largest organ.
The skin is made up of 7 parts. The top layer of your skin is called
Epidermis. This is the part you see. Below this layer is the thicker
layer called the Dermis. This thick secondary layer is made up of
strong and elastic tissue. Inside the Dermis you will find oil glands
--they are called called Sebaceous glands. Also, your veins, arteries,
and nerves are imbedded in the dermis.
The skin repairs and restores itself by creating enzymes that break
down old collagen and making new collagen--hopefully at about the same rate.
Collagen makes up about 80% of skin and is what makes the smooth or wrinkled
depending on how this process is working for you.
